Explore the unexplored side of Tungabhadra Dam - Hampi

In Karnataka’s Ballari district lies the Tungabhadra Dam. Built over the Tungabhadra river in Hosapete, it's a multipurpose dam that attracts thousands of tourists every year. 

With a storage capacity of 101 TMC and a catchment area of 28000 square kilometres, the dam is 49.5 metres high and consists of 33 crest gates. Check out hotels in Hampi to have a nice time after you visit the brilliantly built dam. 

 

Being located at a distance of 18 kilometres from Hampi, it is one of those spots that fall on the way to Pampa Kshetra and acts as a mandatory stop for travellers. Designed by engineer Vepa Krishnamurthy, the Tungabhadra Dam is a sight for enthusiasts who love to explore architecture. An important thing that you cannot miss is the Sound and Light Show that happens between 7:15 pm and 8:30 pm every day. It is the best place to go if your family has little ones who will love the vibrant colours and the music it is accompanied by. 

 

Apart from serving the main purpose of a dam, the Tungabhadra Dam also serves purposes of irrigation, flood control and electricity generation. During the winter months, you can also spot beautiful migratory birds over the expansive blue water of the dam. Practice photography, take a guided tour, have a meal at the stalls available around and shop for souvenirs for friends and family back home. The tickets are priced at INR 20 for adults and INR 10 for kids. There are no extra charges for carrying photography instruments such as phones or cameras. 

 

The best time to visit Karnataka are the months starting from October till April. The weather is pleasant this time of the year and will surely be soothing for you to travel with friends and family.
